Traveling to Iceland
Although there are exemptions* (see below), most passengers arriving in Iceland must choose one of the following options:
- be tested for COVID-19 upon arrival, and possibly undergo a second test**.
- Icelandic nationals and people with permanent residence in Iceland are required to take a second test 4-6 days after arrival in the country, and must take specific precautions from arrival until the results of the second test are delivered.
- from July 31, travelers who intend to stay in Iceland for 10 days or more will have to take the same precautions and undergo a second test (scroll down for more information on this new requirement).
- go into 14-day quarantine.
A test at pre-registration costs 9,000 ISK, but 11,000 ISK if paid on arrival (although no more than 22,000 ISK every 30 days for each individual). Children born 2005 or later will be exempt from the test. There is no charge for the second test.
Note: there is not an option to bring a test result from your home country to be exempt from testing upon arrival in Iceland.
All travelers to Iceland are required to fill out a pre-registration form before their arrival in the country.
Detailed, up-to-date information regarding the testing policy can be found online at the official COVID-19 site published by the Icelandic authorities. Also a useful source of information is the FAQ page of the official COVID-19 site.
*Exemptions to quarantine and COVID testing
Flight crews and cargo crews are not required to go into quarantine.
As of July 16, 2020, passengers from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Germany are not required to go into quarantine or be tested upon arrival (or later), if they have stayed in these countries for 14 days or more before arrival in Iceland.
Please note that tests for COVID-19 are not available at Keflavík airport for passengers arriving from countries that are not considered high risk and are therefore exempt from testing or quarantine.
As of May 15, 2020, passengers from Greenland and the Faroe Islands are not required to go into quarantine or be tested upon arrival (or later), if they have stayed in these countries for 14 days or more before arrival in Iceland.
**Second COVID test – new requirement from July 31
As of 31 July, passengers arriving in Iceland who intend to stay in Iceland for 10 days or more have to undergo 2 COVID tests. The first is at the border on arrival and the second by the primary healthcare service 4-6 days later. In between the two tests, special precautions need to be taken. The second test is free of charge and testing is available at healthcare services all over the country.
People with Icelandic citizenship, residency in Iceland and / or have a robust contact network are obliged to undergo 2 COVID tests regardless of the length of stay in Iceland. Children born in 2005 or later are exempt from both testing and quarantine.
Passengers arriving from Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Germany, plus Faroe Islands and Greenland, are exempt from the quarantine and screening requirements that are generally applicable to passengers arriving in Iceland, if they have stayed in these countries for 14 days or more before arrival in Iceland.
If any passengers affected by this new requirement wish to change their booking (for example, shorten their visit to Iceland), please visit the Change booking section of our website.
